Challenge Cup to Feature USSF Academy Tournament

Charleston, SC. The 2011 Carolina Challenge Cup featuring Major League Soccer kicks off this weekend at Blackbaud Stadium. In addition to showcasing some of the best pro soccer players in the US and Canada, new this year there will be some exceptional young talent on display as four USSF Academy Clubs compete simultaneously in a youth edition of the tournament.

The Chicago Fire, D.C. United, South Carolina United (Battery) and North Meck SC USSF Academy teams will be playing a round-robin tournament in the U16 and U18 age brackets starting this Saturday.

In addition to the competitive game schedule in the Carolina Challenge Academy Cup the junior sides will also be on hand to watch the senior teams compete at Blackbaud Stadium on Saturday night.

The Chicago Fire's two Academy teams will spend part of the following week with the senior team training in Charleston, SC.

For the first time South Carolina United's USSF Academy teams will be competing in the Charleston Battery colors as the Battery strengthens its relationship with the SC United Academy sides.

SC United Executive Director Clark Brisson states, "We are excited about the opportunity to host MLS Academy teams and North Meck in conjunction with the Carolina Challenge Cup. Special thanks to the Charleston Battery for their support and efforts in brining USSF Academy teams to Charleston. We wish all coaches and teams the best of luck and hope they enjoy visiting Charleston."

All the Academy games are open to the public with no charge for admission.
