CFL names players of the week
Published on July 27, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Offensive Player of the Week
QB - Casey Printers #1
BC Lions
Highlights
Printers rushed six (6) times for 56 yards and two (2) touchdowns. He completed 73% (24/33) of his passes for 353 yards and four (4) touchdowns with no interceptions.
Game Notes:
Thank goodness for a bye week as it gave Printers an opportunity to regain the confidence he showed us in week two. He was patient, poised and precise as he led the Lions to a victory. Printers baffled the defence as he stepped into the pocket to pass one time and the next he would bootleg and either run or pass. Never the same look as he methodically orchestrated a six touchdown performance.
1st Runner Up: Damon Allen #9, Toronto Argonauts
2nd Runner Up: Anthony Calvillo #13, Montreal Alouettes
Judge: Bob Krouse
Defensive Player of the Week
LB - Michael Fletcher #2
Toronto Argonauts
Highlights
Fletcher's performance included three (3) tackles, two (2) passes knocked down and one (1) interception which he returned forty-seven (47) yards for a touchdown.
Game Notes:
Fletcher's statistics on the day indicated a very good performance, but what isn't shown in the numbers was Fletcher's ability to frustrate the opponent's advances. He forced the quarterback to either hurry his passes or scramble when he blitzed. He hustled to be the second man in on tackles to assure the back was taken down. He deflected a shuffle pass which definitely would have been a touchdown. Fletcher is one of the premiere linebackers in the CFL.
1st Runner Up: Reggie Durden #8, Montreal Alouettes
2nd Runner Up: Sam Young #2, BC Lions
Judge: Bob Krouse
Lineman of the Week
DL - Mawuko Tugbenyoh #90
BC Lions
Highlights
Tugbenyoh had one (1) tackle, one (1) hurry and two (2) quarterback sacks.
Game Notes:
When a player hustles and never stops until the whistle, he gets rewarded. That is exactly how Tugbenyoh performs; and his reward was two quarterback sacks. He is a very active player and when he gets separation from the blocker, he has the ability to use his moves and get to the passer. Tugbenyoh will only improve as the season continues.
1st Runner Up: Noah Cantor #92, Toronto Argonauts
2nd Runner Up: Daved Benefield #7, Saskatchewan Roughriders
Judge: Bob Krouse
Special Teams Player of the Week
K - Troy Westwood #7
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Highlights
Westwood kicked five (5) field goals (distances: 15, 22, 28, 33, 47) for 15 points.
Game Notes:
Westwood has a dynamic leg, he can hit fifty yard-field goals without diminishing his accuracy to any great extent. Westwood's performance was overshadowed by his team's loss; but his consistency and leg strength will be needed as the season continues.
1st Runner Up: John Turntine #91, Ottawa Renegades
2nd Runner Up: Craig Yeast #5, Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Judge: Bob Krouse
