Central Illinois Flying Aces News Release
URBANDALE, Iowa - The Central Illinois Flying Aces defeated the Des Moines Buccaneers, 1 to 0, as Mitchell Gibson (Phoenixville, Penn.) outdueled the Buccaneers' goaltender.
Gibson made several solid saves throughout the first period for Central Illinois including stopping a Des Moines one-timer from the slot to keep the Buccaneers scoreless.
Central Illinois tallied the only goal of the game at 8:27 in the second. Connor Mayer (Champlin, Minn.) forced a turnover at the blue line to stop a Des Moines entry. Ryan Siedem (Madison, NJ) picked up the loose puck in the neutral zone, brought the puck into the zone, and passed over to Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) in the left lane. The Notre Dame commit found Cal Kiefiuk (Macomb, Mich.) at the top of the right circle. Kiefiuk wristed it past the netminder for his eleventh goal of the season.
Gibson withstood a barrage of shots in the third as the Aces killed off two penalties. Central Illinois' penalty kill was perfect in the game as Gibson earned his first shutout of the season.
Central Illinois concludes their six away game stretch next weekend with two games in Muskegon against the Lumberjacks on February 8th and 9th at 6:15 p.m. CT. The Flying Aces finally return home for two-game slate against the Tri-City Storm on Friday, February 15th for Special Olympics Night and Saturday, February 16th for Hockey Fights Cancer Night presented by OSF HealthCare.
