CBA working on interleague play

December 4, 2008 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Albany Patroons News Release

(Albany, NY) - History could soon be in the making. It's been done in baseball - National League/ American League interleague play, AFL/NFL, ABA/NBA, college basketball non-conference and conference play, now it may happen in the CBA.

In our goal to attract fan friendly and affordable professional basketball to our fans, there have been serious discussions with the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for interleague play.

Jim Coyne, General Manager of the Albany Patroons and Commissioner Joe Newman of the ABA have had ongoing talks as to how this could happen for this season. The ABA is the league that brought us Julius Erving and other NBA greats.

In this current economy, Newman and Coyne both feel the fans and the leagues are the winners. The fans will see exciting interleague play among the best basketball athletes outside of the NBA with a variety of regional teams visiting both leagues' arenas. The leagues will enjoy competitive games between both leagues and more affordable travel arrangements.

Should interleague play come to fruition, the games would take place from December 12th to January 15th. The scheduled games with CBA teams during that period would be erased. After January 15th, the CBA games would begin. The overall record for CBA and ABA teams would include the interleague games. For example, the Patroons would probably play Montreal, New York City and New Jersey at home and away.

This agreement could be consummated within the next 48 hours pending CBA and ABA approvals. We shall keep you posted as to the results of these conversations.
