Published on January 2, 2006 under Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release
Boise, ID (January 2, 2006) - The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Idaho Stampede forward Matt Freije has been named the CBA Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. The first-year CBA player earns the award for the first time in his career and is the second Stampede player in as many weeks to win the award. Idaho center Eric Chenowith won the award last week.
Freije (FREE-gee), a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals in four games last week to help the Stampede to a 3-1 record and move them into second place in the Western Conference. Idaho sits just one-tenth of a quarter point (3.8 avg.) behind conference-leading Yakama (3.9) and is 12-9 on the season. In Idaho's lone loss of the week, a 108-104 overtime defeat at Sioux Falls on Dec. 29, Freije scored a career-high 33 points to go along with nine rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block. He followed that performance by going perfect from the field (8-for-8) and from the free-throw line (7-for-7) in a
120-96 win at Michigan on Dec. 31. Freije ended that game with 27 points.
For the week, the 2004 Vanderbilt graduate shot 56.9 pct. from the field (33-of-58), 80.0 pct. from the line (28-of-35) and 50.0 pct. from behind the
3-point arc (10-of-20). He has started 20 of 21 games he has played in this
season for Idaho and has scored double digits in all but one game. Freije is tied for the team lead in scoring (19.0 ppg.), second in 3-point accuracy
(40.0 pct.), second in rebounds (6.5 rpg.), second in minutes played (758), and third in field goal pct. (47.4 pct.).
Freije played four seasons at Vanderbilt and averaged 18.4 points and 5.4 rebounds his senior season, earning All-SEC First Team honors. He was All-SEC Second Team his junior year and All-SEC Third Team his sophomore season while being named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2001.
Idaho has won seven of its last 10 games and plays at Sioux Falls tonight, Jan. 2, at 7:05 Central Time.
