January 2, 2008 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry News Release
LAWTON, OKLA.- With help from a pair of three-pointers by Gregory Plummer, the Oklahoma Cavalry stayed undefeated at home with a win over the Rio Grande Valley Silverados 119-113 in overtime, taking four of the seven quarter points.
Seven Cavs players contributed to the win, all in double-digit scoring. Daryan Selvy led the way with 27 points and 6 assists. Plummer scored 21 points and Curtis Haywood and Judson Stubbs added 17 points each. Albert Robinson had 14 points, Eddie Smith chipped in 10 points and Marvin Phillips had a double-double pulling down 12 boards to go with his 13 points.
Cavs Head Coach Michael Ray Richardson said it was a good win, but expects more out of his players.
"It's always good to get a win," Coach Richardson said. "Our defense was horrendous in the third quarter, and we have to learn to take pride in ourselves in stopping the other guy. We can't let two players combine for 76 points and expect to win."
Coming out a little sluggish on both ends of the court, the game stayed pretty close until
the second quarter when the Cavs took a 12-point lead with 1:52 remaining. The Cavs led 55-47 at halftime.
The Cavs started the third quarter on fire, but the Silverados showed determination by surging back late in the fourth quarter to take the lead, and led 105-103 with one minute remaining.
Eddie Smith stole the ball with 41 seconds left, and Daryan Selvy's put-back tied the game at 105 to take the Cavs into overtime.
With back-to-back three-pointers, Gregory Plummer extended the Cavs lead to eight in the overtime, and the Cavs commanded the floor to pull out the hard-fought win.
Demorris Smith and Rod Nealy combined for 76 of the Silverados 113 points, each with a double-double. Smith scored 40 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Nealy had 36 points to go with his 13 boards. Rounding out the scorers were Brian Evans with 12 points, Renaldo Norman with 11 and Walt Waters with 10 points.
The Cavs take on the Silverados for the second game of the series tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. at the Great Plains Coliseum.
