Cavs Opening Night Proves Successful

LAWTON, Okla. - The first night of Cavalry basketball started with a victory over the Albany Patroons, with a final score of 93-88.

The Cavs starting line-up was powered by three returning players from the 2008 CBA Championship team. Brandon Dean, DeAnthony Bowden and Shawn Daniels helped newcomers, Tim Ellis and Elvin Mims settle into a competitive groove with the team.

The Cavalry trailed the Patroons 46-39 at half-time. The Cavs came out with a vengeance in the third quarter outscoring the Patroons 30-18. They were able to hold on to the second-half lead with strong defense and solid shooting.

The Cavs were able to outrebound Albany with 49 rebounds by the Cavs and 42 by the Patroons. Albany led the game in personal fouls with 29 to Lawton Fort Sill's 26. The Patroons also led in turnovers, with 17 to the Cavs 15. The Cavalry took the lead in assists with 19 to the Patroons 12.

Mims the Cavalry forward from University of Southern Mississippi, scored the Cavs only double-double of the game with 10 points and 15 rebounds. He also had 3 assists and no turnovers in 42 minutes of play.

Daniels the Cavalry center from Utah State led the Cavs with 25 points in the game. Daniels also had 8 rebounds in his 43 minutes of play.

The Lawton Fort Sill Cavalry and the Albany Patroons return to the Great Plains Coliseum on Wednesday, January 7 with a 7:05 p.m. tip-off.

CAVS HIT TRIPLE DIGITS IN OVERTIME LAWTON

, Okla. - Cavs fans got an extra five minutes of high energy basketball in a thrilling 100-97 victory over the Albany Patroons in night two, giving the Cavs a 2-0 winning record in the CBA.

Cavs co-owner Phil Kennedy said, "It was bonus basketball." The Lawton/Ft. Sill Cavalry basketball players leveled out the score board at 88 points with only two seconds left of regular game time. Cavs guard Eddie Smith from Texas A& M, tied the game with a technical foul free throw.

Michael Ray Richardson head coach for the Lawton/ Ft. Sill Cavalry said it was a team win. The Championship caliber of the players was on display tonight, he said. Richardson said, "After winning a Championship players know how to win. That is something that cannot be taught, you just know. And they know how to win."

In the season's first night of overtime the Cavs team fired off with three unanswered field goals pushing the score to 94-88. The Cavs five starters each ended the game in the double digits for total points. Eddie Smith led the scoring with 19 points, seven assists, and only one turnover in 35 minutes of play. The other players in double digits for total points were Tim Ellis, DeAnthony Bowden, Brandon Dean, and Shawn Daniels.

Elvin Mims, know around the league for his mastery of rebounding, showed his true skill with his second consecutive night of double digit rebounds by pulling down 11 grabs. The Cavs showed polished ball handling skills, ending the game with only 10 turnovers to the Patroons 21.

Co-owner Mike Brown said, "The last two nights have been almost like a Championship series. Incredible basketball."

The Patroons are back in town on Friday and Saturday nights. Action begins at 7:05 pm each night.
