Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry News Release
LAWTON, OKLA.- After trailing the majority of the game, the Oklahoma Cavalry came from behind to win the second contest against the East Kentucky Miners 104-101.
Five Cavs players scored in double digits led by Curtis Haywood with 22 points. Daryan Selvy had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Albert Robinson chipped in 17 points along with 6 assists. Marvin Phillips contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds to secure his third consecutive double-double of the season.
Cavs Head Coach Michael Ray Richardson said he was proud of his team for rallying back from a 10-point deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter to win the game.
"Our guys showed a lot of heart and backbone tonight to come from 10-points down and win by 15 in the fourth quarter," Coach Richardson said. "We still had too many turnovers and have to continue to protect our home court."
Both teams got out to a slow start in the first half of play, but the Miners went on a 14-7 run and went up 34-24 with 34 seconds left in the first quarter. The Cavs were down by as many as 12 in the second quarter before they were able to regain the lead at the 5:45 mark on a pair of free throws by Daryan Selvy.
The Cavs went up by eight with 2:04 remaining in the half, but found themselves down by 2 going into halftime.
With the Miners controlling the third quarter, the Cavs did not take the lead again until the 9:19 mark in the final quarter of play on a 2-point field-goal by Curtis Haywood. The Miners then went on a 9-0 run to go up 98-92 with 5:49 left to play.
Just as it seemed the Miners were about to pull away, the Cavs came soaring back and took a 2-point lead with 3:01 remaining on a dunk by Darold Crow. Eddie Smith clinched the victory with one second remaining by making the first of two free throws.
Guard Josh Pace and forward James Jackson led the Miners with 34 points and 24 points respectively.
The Cavs are off to a 3-0 start for their inaugural season in Lawton and are back in action Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Great Falls.
