Cavalry To Honor Influential African-Americans From Community

LAWTON, OKLA.-The Oklahoma Cavs will be recognizing the top influential African-Americans from the Lawton area Sunday, Jan. 20 at 4:00 p.m. at the Great Plains Coliseum.

In celebration of Martin Luther King Day, the men and women will be honored during halftime for the great strides and contributions they made in the community.

Those being honored are: Odell Gunter, retired Executive Director of Great Plains Improvement Foundation and Community Action Agency; Cheryl Monts, provides leadership groups for Lawton senior high school students; Sylvia Williams, Assistant Principal at Tomlinson Middle School and provides leadership to ZENOS-girls; Gary Bender, Senior Pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church and former President of the NAACP; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Johnson, former Deputy Superintendent of Lawton Public Schools and Mrs. Johnson Director of Lawton USO; Mike Sapenter, Vice President of Stanley; Billy Taylor, Goodyear Plant Manager and active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; TW Shannon, State Representative; Grady Brewer, winner of The Contender Season 2; Annette Dawkins, Executive Director of Northside Chamber of Commerce; Mike Gentry, owns and operates local McDonald's restaurants; Dr. William Smith, pastor of Temple Baptist Church and owner of A Cut Above barbershop; Charles Whitlow, Senior Pastor of Union Baptist Church; Ed Davis, Presiding Elder for 12 th District AME Churches in Oklahoma City Metro; and James Thorton, former math teacher and counselor for LPS and longtime pastor of Greater Galilee Baptist Church.

Come out and show your support and appreciation for these outstanding community leaders.

The Cavalry will defend their home court against the Minot Skyrockets for their final game of the 4 game series.
