Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
ABILENE, T.X. -- The Cats' 10-run top of third inning was not enough on its own, but Fort Worth's 15-run attack was good enough to hold off the Dogs on Wednesday, beating Abilene 15-13 at Walt Driggers Field.
Woods Fines started for the Dogs and faced eight batters in the first inning. Jose Ruiz highlighted the frame by cranking a three-run home run down the right field line to give Fort Worth an early lead.
The Dogs responded with a run in the home half of the opening inning on a run-scoring double from Kyle Nichols, but the Cats bats were only warming up.
In the top of third, Fort Worth hung 10 runs on the board by sending 16 men to the plate. Every starter batted twice in the inning except for Antoin Gray and Jose Ruiz. C.J. Beatty walked twice and scored twice in the frame, and Chuck Caufield went 2-for-2 with an R.B.I. and a run scored in the third inning alone. Wade Morrison relieved Fines with two outs in the third only to allow three more walks and another run. In total, the Cats used seven walks and six hits to put together a 10-run inning.
Abilene continued to fight back in on Wednesday night. The Dogs used R.B.I. singles from Zach Welch and Jason Martin in the third to get back within seven at 13-6.
The Abilene offense tacked on a run in the fourth before pasting a five spot on the board in the fifth. Clint Stroud, Danny Gonzalez, and Joe Weik each drove in a run while Eddie Browne knocked in a pair to make up a five-run fifth. However, the Dogs comeback fell short in large part due to the Cats bullpen. Brandon Wilkerson, T.J. Bozeman, and Jeff Jamnik teamed up to retire nine Prairie Dogs in a row to end the game.
Over their last seven games, the Abilene lineup has gone 10-73 (.137) in the sixth inning and later.
Jose Ruiz was the toughest out in the Cats' lineup. The first baseman went 4-for6 with a home run, a double, three runs scored, and four R.B.I.s.
In total, the game featured 28 runs, 34 hits, seven errors, 23 runners left on base, and lasted three hours and 19 minutes.
The eight-game series continues on Thursday night when the set shifts to LaGrave Field in Fort Worth. Hear all the action on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
