Cats Return from Ugly Road Trip, Fall to Last Place Thunder 5-3

June 27, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Fort Worth Cats, despite homeruns from first-baseman Jose Ruiz and shortstop Brandon Jones, could not keep up with the McAllen Thunder in their 5-3 loss on Wednesday night at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX.

Ruiz had an RBI single in the first inning along with his solo homerun to lead off the sixth inning. Jones' homerun was his fifth on the season and he leads the team in that category. The Cats are now 0-12 this season when scoring three runs or less.

The rest of the Cats' offense was silenced by McAllen starter Frank James (3-1) who lasted eight innings and only allowed three runs on seven hits. James struck out eight batters and only walked one. Closer Chad Robinson picked up his third save of the year in a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Through six innings, Fort Worth starter Steve Barnes (3-2) held the Thunder to three runs on six hits. Barnes struck out and walked four batters. However, the Cats ran out of gas and relief pitchers Mace Thurman (2-2) and T.J. Bozeman allowed two more runs on three hits.

McAllen designated hitter Gianison Rosa led the Thunder offense going 1-for-4 with two runs batted in on a groundout in the first and a single in the seventh inning to put the Thunder on top for good. Second baseman Mike Demperio was the man to cross the plate in both the seventh and ninth innings to seal the game for McAllen.

McAllen improves their record to 11-22 and remain in last place of the South division of the North American League. The Cats record falls to 17-15 and the gap between the first place Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings increases to three games.

Fort Worth and McAllen face off again for the second game of their four game series Thursday night at 7:05 at LaGrave Field. It is Thirsty Thursday, as draft beer and soft drinks are only two dollars each. Tickets can be purchased online at FWCats.com or by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
