Fort Worth Cats News Release

FORT WORTH - - Cats Starter Blake Parry and reliever James Giulietti struggled throughout the opening six frames of game one of the United League championship series. Despite eight runs on 13 hits for the Fort Worth offense, it was not enough to overcome a 12-8 loss to Edinburg.

The Roadrunners took control of the game immediately by exploding for four runs on four hits. Back-to-back RBI singles by designated hitter Derek Perren and left fielder Stantrel Smith helped Edinburg take a commanding 4-0 lead.

Right fielder Chuck Caufield answered back for the Cats by hitting a triple down the line to score left fielder Chad Gabriel and cutting the lead to three runs. However, an error by third baseman CJ Beatty was followed by four more hits to begin the second inning for Edinburg, immediately putting Fort Worth in an even deeper hole. That would be it for Blake Parry, as he lasted just two innings to end the night with a 22.50 earned run average after surrendering seven runs (five earned).

Despite trailing 7-1, the Cats kept fighting on offense. A single to center field by RJ Harris pushed across one more lone run in the second. In the fourth inning, catcher Derek Marshall his first home run of the postseason, cutting the Roadrunners lead to 8-4.

Four runs would be as close to Edinburg as Fort Worth would get all night, as the Roadrunners scored three runs off reliever James Giulietti in the fifth frame from back-to-back singles by center fielder Vincent Blue and second baseman Wilmer Pino. The lefty from New York would last three innings, surrendering four earned runs.

Cats reliever Casey Russell, a right hander who started during the regular season, came out of the bullpen to hold Edinburg at bay. Russell went four innings, striking out three and giving up just one run.

Edinburg starter Julio Castro, making just his third start of 2012, was credited with the win after lasting five full innings.

Fort Worth has the chance for revenge tomorrow at 7:05 as Blake Nation will take the hill for game two. The big righty from Georgia will go against Edinburg right hander Aaron Tullo. Nation struggled in the Cats' first outing of the postseason, surrendering six runs in four and two-thirds innings. Tickets can be purchased online at FWCats.com and by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
