Cats Fall in Extra Innings as Divisional Race Heats Up

July 14, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

The Cats looked to get back in the win column against the Mystic Schooners tonight, who occupy the 2nd spot in the southern division. Pitching was phenomenal from both sides Gordon Graceffo was simply brilliant over 6 innings of work he allowed only a pair of hits, while striking out 9 batters and blanking the Schooners through 6 complete innings. However, the offense couldn't back up their man on the mound tonight, as the Cats got a runner into scoring position in 3 of the first 4 innings and were unable push one across. Mystic's starter Tyler Schoff danced out of trouble in his 6 innings and kept a zero on the board as well through 6. It would take extra innings to decide this one as the Cats loaded the bases in the 9th with two outs, but the Schooners were able to get out of the jam. In the top of the 10th inning Madison Jeffery who pitched the ninth was back out there and with one out and a man on second left a slider in the zone to pinch hitter T.T. Bowen who sent it over the right-field fence for a two run homer. Those would be the only two runs of the game as the Cats brought the winning run to the plate in the 10th but, much like the entire game, couldn't get that big hit to push runners across. This is the Cats 3rd loss in a row, and now with just a half game lead in the standings over two teams who are hot on their tale the Cats need to figure out a way to put some Ws in the win column. With 18 games left each game is so important and the Cats need to ignite what has for the majority of this season been one of the most explosive and dominant offenses in the league. Graceffo has thrown the gauntlet down with his performance tonight, and it will fall to another of the rotation's top arms in Nick Payero to try to match Gordon's efforts tonight with a big start of his own against the Danbury Westerners tomorrow night at The Joe. If the pitching can rise to the occasion and the offense re-discovers its identity, then the Cats could once again be hot, and just at the right time.
