Cats Can't Stop Roadrunners, Edinburg Wins ULB Title
August 20, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release
The Fort Worth Cats were one strike away from capturing the United League Baseball title in the ninth inning of game five of the ULB Championship, but the Edinburg Roadrunners came roaring back to snatch the title away with a 10-6 victory in 10 innings on Monday.
The Cats had control of the game since the first inning when they answered the Roadrunners run with three of their own.
Fort Worth added another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth on back-to-back wild pitches by Edinburg starter Ryan Zimmerman.
However, the Roadrunners continued to chip away at the Cats' lead. Edinburg got one run in the second on a Tim Battle solo home run then added another in the sixth and seventh.
Cats' closer Trevor Longfellow came in to close in the ninth and got the first two men out before allowing back-to-back singles to left field. Travis Clark then grounded a slow hopper to short that went under the glove of shortstop Logan Brumley allowing the tying run to score.
Longfellow came on to pitch the ninth and former Cat Tim Maitland hit a sacrifice fly to center and Jordan Etier launched a three-run home run to right field to put the Cats away.
Fort Worth starter Cole Stephens was in line for the win before the error as he went 6.2 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters.
Edinburg closer Alex Schmarzo was credited with the win and pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Schmarzo got Cameron Monger to strike out to end the season as the Roadrunners took to the field to accept the trophy and celebrate with champagne.
The Cats finish the season as the ULB Champion runner up for the second straight year as the Roadrunners reclaim their title.
