Catfish Rally from Five Down but Fall to Charleston 7-6 in Series Opener

CHARLESTON, SC--- Trailing 5-0 early, the Columbus Catfish rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning only to lose tonight 7-6 to the Charleston RiverDogs at Riley Ballpark in Charleston, SC. 1B Dan Batz went 3-4 with a double and 3 RBI and Catfish SS David Nicholson also had three hits, including an RBI single in the seventh that scored Batz and temporarily gave Columbus a 6-5 lead. Charleston's SS Marcos Vechionacci singled home two runs in the bottom of the seventh against Catfish RHP Albenis Castillo to hand Columbus its third loss in four games.

RHP Blake Johnson started for the Fish and allowed five runs on five hits in the first four innings. In the fifth, Batz drove home 3B Blake DeWitt and 2B Travis Denker with a two-run double off the left-center field wall, and came home to score on Nicholson's RBI single. In the seventh, DeWitt had an infield RBI single to cut the RiverDogs' lead to 5-4, and with two on and two out, Batz and Nicholson's back-to-back singles gave Columbus the lead. Charleston would gain it back minutes later in the bottom of the frame.

Charleston's Carlos Rosario earned the win on the mound and RiverDogs' RHP Mike Martinez picked up his third save of the year. LHP Carlos Alvarez threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Catfish in the eighth. The Catfish scored a season-high nine runs and a tied a season high in hits.

Tomorrow Columbus RHP Landestoy Troncoso faces off against Charleston RHP Brett Smith at 8:05 PM in Charleston. The game can be heard in Columbus on 1460 WHAL starting at 7:50 PM with the Columbus Catfish Pregame Show.
