Cary Invasion News Release
Greensboro, NC: The Greensboro Cobras had everything to play for on Sunday afternoon against the visiting Cary Invasion squad. At stake for the Cobras was the final playoff spot in the TRBL West. The Cary Invasion had clinched its playoff spot in the TRBL East 2 weeks earlier but still had eyes set on an undefeated regular season. The hot, stuffy, but charming Goode Gymnasium on the campus of Bennett College would prove to be a formidable sixth man for the Cobras that would make this game among the best of the year in the Tobacco Road Basketball League.
The heat slowed the normally up-tempo Invasion team out of the gate in a game where even fans were congregating at open doors for a breath of cooler air. The half court game suited the Cobras well, while the visitors struggled to find a rhythm. The teams played a nip-and-tuck opening quarter. More jumpers fell for Greensboro in the second, but the Invasion found a way to push the pace just a little more to earn a 53-48 halftime lead.
Early in the third quarter it looked as though Cary was going to blow the game open, jumping out to a quick 15 point lead. But, sharpshooting by the Cobras, coupled with scores of missed free throws and turnovers by the Invasion, brought the game to a dead heat in the final two minutes. Tied at 108, Invasion guard Corey Evans (Cincinnati Christian) hit one of two free throws. Following a Greensboro turnover, Invasion Guard Freddie Little (Montivello) hit a short jumper in the lane to give Cary a 111-108 lead with 22 seconds left in the game. Cary's signature pressure defense closed the game by not allowing Greensboro to launch a tying shot.
Corey Evans finished with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Invasion forward Charles Ward (St. Augustine's College) added 11 points and 19 rebounds. Norman Carter (Winston-Salem State) had 27 points in the losing effort for Greensboro. Cary (11-0) plays next on June 9th at home against the same Greensboro team. Greensboro (4-6) is still in playoff contention and next hosts Wilmington on June 8th.
