Asheville Altitude News Release
Asheville, N.C., - Matt Carroll scored a career high 30 points as the Roanoke Dazzle slipped pass the Asheville Altitude, 112-104, Friday night at the Asheville Civic Center.
"I hit a few shots in a row and got into a zone," said Carroll. "I was pleased that everyone played good and everyone worked together."
Asheville eased out of the starting gates, sinking their first basket then missing the next five before settling down the offense. NBDL scoring leader Antonio Meeking continued to shoulder the offensive load scoring double-digit points (12) in the first six minutes of play.
Roanoke played aggressively the entire game leading the Altitude in scoring three of the four quarters. Cory Alexander paced the team in the first quarter, scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 field goals as the Dazzle took an early one point lead, 28-27.
Alexander often found the open lane to the basket as he penetrated several times causing Altitude players to leave the floor due to foul trouble. Nevertheless Meeking plagued by three first half fouls, found relief from his teammates, as all but two players scored in the second quarter to recapture the lead at the half by two points.
Both teams traded baskets throughout the second half. Tony Kitchings? free-throw to stamp an old fashion three-point play gave the Altitude a one point lead with four minutes left in regulation, but it was the "Carroll and Alexander Show" down the stretch that gave the Dazzle their 12 point marginal win following a 16-6 run in the final seconds of play to secure the victory.
Five players scored in double digits for the Dazzle including Corey Alexander (17), Isiah Victor (18), Terrance Shannon (14) and James Thomas (12). Two players finished with double-double performances as Alexander added with 11 assists and Thomas grabbed 11 rebounds respectively.
Asheville also produced five double-digit scorers including Meeking (28), Lenny Stokes (18), Tim Bowers (15) and Joe Forte and Ron Slay with 10 points apiece.
"It always feels good to play at home but we let this one get away from us at the end," said Tim Bowers. "We got frustrated out there and we can?t be effective when we are frustrated. The only good thing about this loss is that we get to go at it again tomorrow."
The Altitude and Dazzle face off again tomorrow, Jan. 8 at the Asheville Civic Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.
