New Britain Bees News Release
(New Britain, CT)- Steve Carrillo chose the perfect time to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, coming up with a walk-off double in the bottom in the ninth to give the New Britain Bees a 5-4 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
After the Blue Crabs rallied for three runs in the top half of the ninth against Craig Stem to tie the game at four, it looked as if the teams were headed to their second straight extra-inning game after Jon Jones and Anthony Hewitt popped out to start the ninth. However, James Skelton worked his third walk of the game to represent the winning run. That brought Carrillo who, on a 1-1 count, ripped a double into the left field corner, sending Skelton racing around third to score to send 4,982 Bees' fans home happy.
The Bees were in control for the majority of the game, with starter Shawn Haviland turning in his best performance of the season. The right-hander tossed seven great innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out four. The Harvard graduate's seven innings of work represent a personal season best.
Offensively, the Bees got off to a quick start, putting up runs in each of the first two innings. New Britain began the scoring in the first against Southern Maryland right-hander Tim Sexton on a Jovan Rosa sacrifice fly that brought home James Skelton. The Bees would tack on two more runs in their half of the second when Anthony Hewitt brought home Kevin Rivers and Michael Crouse (who both reached on hits) with a two-run single. One more run would come across in the fifth inning for the Bees to cap their scoring until Carrillo's walk-off.
New Britain and Southern Maryland will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 from New Britain Stadium. Both teams will send left-handers to the hill to start the game, with the Bees going with Josh Outman and the Blue Crabs starting Scott Snodgress. Along with tomorrow being Hardware City Family Fun Day, it is also Superhero Day where fans are encouraged to come to the ballpark dressed as their favorite superheroes.
