Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgewater, NJ) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (14-28) were defeated by the Somerset Patriots (25-18) 2-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening on a walk-off solo home run to straightaway centerfield by Matt Fields against reliever Taylor Thompson in the bottom half of the ninth inning. The Patriots have now taken the first two games of the weekend series as Bridgeport looks to salvage the finale tomorrow afternoon. The Bluefish suffer their fifth loss in the opposing team's final turn at bat and also drop their 15th game in which they had a lead that resulted in defeat.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Blake Beavan registered a no-decision, firing five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, walking two and striking out three. Somerset Starting Pitcher Shaun Garceau also did not factor in the game's final outcome, surrendering just one run on seven hits in eight innings of work, walking one and striking out two. Thompson (1-2) was tagged with the loss giving up the big fly to Fields on the second pitch he had thrown. Jeremy McBryde (3-0) was victorious out of the bullpen for the home team, striking out two while giving up one hit in his lone inning of relief.

Bridgeport took the early 1-0 lead off Garceau in the top half of the third inning on a two-out opposite field run scoring single off the bat of Welington Dotel, plating Luis Hernandez with the game's first run after he reached with a one out base knock of his own. The singles for both Hernandez and Dotel extended each of their hitting streaks to a team high 11 consecutive games. Somerset answered back in the home half of the seventh inning against Bridgeport reliever Brian Moran on an RBI single with one out by Scott Kelly, allowing Rob Kral to cross the plate after he led off the frame with a double. With Vinny Zarrillo representing the go-ahead run later on in the seventh, Eric Niesen came on for Moran and struck out Mycal Jones swinging to keep the score deadlocked at one.

The battle of the bullpens continued as the late innings moved along. After McBryde struck out Anthony Giansanti to end the top of the ninth, stranding Rossmel Perez at first who represented the lead run following his third hit of the contest, the Patriots came to bat in the bottom of the frame looking to send their fans home with smiles on their faces, and that is exactly what happened as Fields launched the game winner over the centerfield fence just out of the reach of Endy Chavez, and the celebration was on as Fields was greeted by his teammates at home plate. Perez led the way for Bridgeport offensively with his first three-hit game of the season.
