Carolina Ends Season With 16th Straight Loss

CHARLOTTE ­ The Carolina Cobras became the sixth team in AFL history to go winless, but the first to do so in a 16-game season, with a 63-47 loss to the New York Dragons in front of 6,279 fans at the Charlotte Coliseum. With the win and Detroit's loss to Orlando, the Dragons claimed the AFL Eastern Division championship.

The Memphis Pharaohs were the last winless AFL team when they finished 0-14 in 1996. The Cobras also tied the Pharaohs' AFL record for most consecutive losses by dropping their 17th straight game over two seasons. Two arenafootball2 teams have posted 0-16 seasons.

Dragons quarterback Aaron Garcia won game MVP honors, completing 26-of-34 passes for 365 yards and eight touchdowns. William Holder caught nine passes for 129 yards and four touchdowns and Todd Doxzon had six receptions for 78 yards and three scores for New York.

Robert Hall was 25-of-37 for 200 yards and four touchdowns for the Cobras. Alvin Ashley had six receptions for 47 yards and returned six kickoffs for 142 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown. Jamaal Garman caught five passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Ward had four catches for 18 yards and one touchdown, and ran back an interception return for a 51-yard touchdown.

The Cobras scored on each of their six first-half possessions, posting four touchdowns, three thrown by Hall, and two field goals. New York¹s Garcia passed for four touchdowns in the half, but was intercepted twice.

Garcia threw four more touchdowns in the second half, and Rodney Filer added a score on the ground, as the Dragons scored on five of six possessions. The Cobras managed just two touchdowns in the second half, fumbling twice and missing a field goal.

SNAKE BITES: Ward's 51-yard interception return was the longest in Cobras history...Ashley's 56-yard kickoff return tied the Cobras season-long... Carolina's 33 first-half points marked a season-high in any half...Matt George¹s 51-yard field goal tied a franchise-long...George tied the franchise single-season records for made field goals (15) and attempts (42).
