Carolina-Atlanta Series Notes: The Carolina Courage has never lost to Atlanta in the WUSA regular season. The Courage is unbeaten on the road, but the Beat is on a WUSA-record four-game winning streak.
Coach's Keys To Winning: "Right now Atlanta is very difficult to score on. They play a terrific team defense and they are very difficult to get behind. They're a physical team. We're going to have to match that and bring a great competitive spirit. Holding possession and finding our rhythm will be critical for us."
COURAGE INJURY UPDATE:
OUT: Erin Baxter (right ankle sprain) DOUBTFUL: none QUESTIONABLE: none PROBABLE: none
TEAM NOTES:
Fotopoulos Among League Leaders: Forward Danielle Fotopoulos, who led the Courage in scoring last year, is tied for second in the WUSA in goals (5) with Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper and Boston's Dagny Mellgren. San Jose's Katia, this week's WUSA Player of the Week, holds the top spot with six goals.
Courage Offense On The Rise: The Courage, who averaged only 1.33 goals through its first six games, has scored six goals in its last two matches.
Turning Things Around: The Courage finished last season with 28 goals scored and 40 allowed. This season, the Courage has tallied 14 and conceded 10. At the current rate, Carolina would end the regular season with 37 goals scored and only 26 allowed.
Courage Defense: Stingy Against The Beat: The Courage has allowed the Atlanta Beat to score only three goals all-time â the fewest a WUSA opponent has scored against Carolina.
UnBEATable When Scoring First?: When scoring first, the Atlanta Beat has never lost a match, with an all-time record of 12-0-3. However, the Courage has (1) scored first in six of eight games this season, (2) has never allowed a Beat goal in the first half of play, and (3) has held Atlanta scoreless in the team's only previous meeting this season.
Baxter Sidelined Three Weeks With Ankle Sprain: The Courage's Erin Baxter, who missed a game earlier this season with a mild concussion, experienced another frustrating setback on Saturday, badly spraining her right ankle, only minutes after checking into the game. Team doctors examined Baxter upon her return to Raleigh-Durham. She is expected to return in three weeks time.
Courage Hopes To Continue Dominance Over Red Hot Beat: The Carolina Courage, who has never lost to the Atlanta Beat, owns a 3 win, 0 loss, and 1 tie all-time record against Atlanta. The Beat is the hottest team in the WUSA, winning its last four games.
Overbeck Easing Her Way Back: Courage captain Carla Overbeck has started the last two games for Carolina, playing the first half of both matches. Overbeck's timely return has fortunately coincided with Staci Wilson's suspension and Erin Baxter's rash of injuries.
