Charge Welcome Boston for WUSA Showdown
June 13, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
Philadelphia Charge News Release
The Philadelphia Charge take the field again this Saturday, June 15, when they host the U.S. National Team member Kristine Lilly and the Boston Breakers at 7 p.m. at Villanova Stadium. In celebration of Father's Day, the first 1,000 Dads to the game will receive a tie courtesy of Comcast.
The first-place Charge are 5-1-2 for 17 points this season and lead the second-place Atlanta Beat by one point. Philadelphia played to a 1-1 tie last Saturday against the Washington Freedom, moving to 1-0-2 over its last three games. Saturday's tilt rounds out a three-game homestand for the Charge, who are 2-0-2 at home this season and 4-0-3 in their last seven at Villanova Stadium dating back to last season. The club has outscored its opponents 16-7 over that seven-game span.
Charge forward Marinette Pichon expects to carry the load offensively for Philly. She had the team's lone goal last weekend and has scored three of the club's last four goals. Last weekend the French National Team star unloaded a team season-high eight shots, as the Charge have yet to relinquish first place in the WUSA this season.
In goal, Melissa Moore is leading the league in wins (5), goals-against average (0.88) and save percentage (75%). She is one of the early favorites for WUSA Goalkeeper of the Year, having already posted two shutouts this season. She will have to be on the top of her game, as Lilly, Dagny Mellgren and Maren Meinert are among the all-time leaders in scoring against the Charge. Mellgren is tied among active players for the most goals (4) and points (8) against the Charge, while Lilly's seven points and Meinert's six versus Philly are good enough for third and fourth on the list, respectively.
