COURAGE INJURY UPDATE:
OUT: None
DOUBTFUL: none
QUESTIONABLE: none
PROBABLE: Erin Baxter (concussion), Carla Overbeck (right knee â post surgery recovery)
TEAM NOTES:
Livin' Up To The Hype: German striker Birgit Prinz arrived one week ago amid sky-high expectations. Partly due to the newness of the language, Birgit preferred to keep a low profile, familiarize herself with her new teammates, and let her actions on the field speak for her. She did that. Prinz was dominant, scoring once, striking the post twice, and wreaking havoc every time she touched the ball. She sparked the Courage to its most lop-sided victory in its history, earning Hyundai Hero of the Game honors along the way.
International Reunion Coming Up: When the Courage travels to Boston this weekend, Carolina forward Birgit Prinz will have a chance to play against her long-time teammates on the German National Team Maren Meinert and Bettina Wiegmann, while Norwegian midfielders Hege Riise and Unni Lehn will take on countrywomen Dagny Mellgren and Ragnhild Gulbrandsen. Lehn and Gulbrandsen were teammates on Norwegian club team Trondhiems-Orn, and played together as recently as March 28th against Finland's Helsinki in the UEFA quarterfinals.
Wilson Eligible For Saturday's Game: The return from suspension of defender Staci Wilson will present some interesting choices for Courage head coach Marcia McDermott. Wilson was forced to sit out Carolina's last game against New York due to the red card she received against Philadelphia. In her absence, Carla Overbeck and Nel Fettig each played a half at center back in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Power.
Baxter Expected To Return: Defensive stalwart Erin Baxter was rested on Saturday as a safety precaution, after suffering a mild concussion in the Courage's May 18th game against the Washington Freedom. Baxter is expected to be ready for action this weekend against the Breakers in Boston.
O'Hanley Makes Her Mark: In the absence of Baxter and Wilson, Courage defender Brooke O'Hanley stepped into the Courage starting lineup on Saturday and did an outstanding job. The former Portland Pilot defender was given an invitational tryout by the Courage following an impressive perfomance at the WUSA combine in February. She earned a roster spot with her work ethic and winning attitude, and she continues to impress the Courage coaching staff.
Familiar Faces On Opposing Bench: The June 8th game against Boston will reunite Courage players with former teammates and current Breakers players Sarah Yohe and Sarah Dacey. Both players were waived by Carolina in the off season and found their way onto the Boston roster.
