Philadelphia Charge News Release
VILLANOVA, PA (June 3, 2002) - Philadelphia Charge midfielder Kelly Smith will have an MRI Monday to pinpoint what damage was done to her right knee during Saturday's scoreless draw against the defending WUSA champion San Jose CyberRays.
Smith suffered the injury in the 72nd minute when her knee awkwardly buckled while trying to make a move down the left flank 18 yards from the end line. Smith immediately hit the turf and was grabbing for her knee in obvious pain. She was removed from the field by a stretcher and was later taken to Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Smith, a member of England's National Team, is leading the Charge (5-1-1, 16 pts, 1st place) with four goals and three assists for 11 points - the exact totals she had during an injury-plagued 2001 season.
