New Jersey Cardinals News Release
The Oneonta Tigers (Detroit) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals 13-1 tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey in the middle game of their three game set. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 12-14, while the Tigers improved to a NY-Penn league best 17-6. Starter Zack Zuercher (1-3) took the loss for the Cards, while Oneonta starter Burke Badenhop picked up his second win.
The Tigers got on the board early with a 5 run second inning, highlighted by Jeremy Lasters three run homer to left field, the first of three hit by Oneonta in the game. Shortstop Michael Holliman took Zuercher deep in the third and catcher Chris Torres, who was 4-5, followed one inning later with his first home run of the season for a 7-1 lead. The Tigers tacked on 3 more in the 5th off Zuercher and reliever Michael Repole. They added 1 more in the 6th and 3 in the seventh to cap the scoring. Every Tigers starter had a hit and a RBI as Cardinals pitching gave up a season high in hits, 17, and runs, 13.
The Cardinals offense was never able to get momentum against Badenhop as he cruised through 6 innings, allowing only a Jose Menedez RBI single in the 2nd. Badenhop gave up 4 hits, while striking out 4. Cards DH A.J Van Slyke finished 3-3.
The teams are scheduled to play the final game of the series Monday, July 18 at 7:15. The Cards will send ace Nick Webber (2-1, 1.71) to the mound, while Oneonta counters with Sandy Vasquez (1-0, 3.52). KFC and the New Jersey Herald are sponsoring a Kids Eat Free night, where all children will be allowed to eat free of charge. Also, any ticket holder for the July 17th game will be able to redeem their ticket stub for a free ticket to Monday's game.
