New Jersey Cardinals News Release


The New Jersey Cardinals defeated the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) 5-3 tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to push their season-best win streak to five. The win moved the Cardinals back to .500 at 17-17, while the loss dropped the Spinners to 18-16. Reliever Scott Vanderweg picked up the win for the Cardinals to improve to 1-0 on the season, while Blake Maxwell (1-2) took the loss for Lowell. Matt Trent earned his 7th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The Spinners took an early lead over the Cardinals with 2 runs in their half of second, highlighted by Designated Hitter Zak Farkes2-out RBI double to left field off Cardinals starter Kyle Sadlowski. The Cardinals answered back in the bottom of the 4th with one run to cut the lead in half. Tyler Greene walked and then stole both second and third base. He scored one batter later on first baseman Adam Rodgersgroundout.

The Cardinals grabbed the lead in the sixth when lead-off hitter Casey Rowlett and center fielder Yonathan Sivira singled consecutively to start the inning and each moved up on a double steal. Adam Rodgers then grounded to third but a dropped ball at home by Lowell catcher Mitch Stachowsky allowed two runs to score for a 3-2 New Jersey lead. The Spinners tied the game in the seventh on an unearned run off of Cardinals reliever Quinton Robertson. Stachowsky reached on an error and scored on second baseman Dominic Ramosgroundout to third.

New Jersey took the lead for good in the bottom of the 8th with their final two runs. Tyler Greene scored from third when Maxwell uncorked a wild pitch and Rodgers raced home when Matthew Mercurio could not handle Siviras groundball to third.

The Cardinals and the Spinners continue their three-game set tomorrow, July 26th. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. Blake Hawksworth (0-1, 4.50) starts for New Jersey and Lowell will counter with Clay Buchholz (0-0, 4.20). Tomorrows game will also feature the second night of the Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and WSUS Field of Dreamscontest, in which the winner will drive away with a brand new Chrysler PT cruiser convertible.
