BURLINGTON, VT --- New Jersey scored in double figures for the third straight game as the Cardinals scored 12 runs over the first four innings in a 13-6 victory and three-game sweep of the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at Centennial Field.
A.J. Van Slyke gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homer to rightcenter off Expos starter Carlos Martinez. New Jersey added two more runs in the second for a 4-0 lead before a wild top of the third inning.
Van Slyke led off the third and saw an 0-1 pitch go behind his back. The next pitch from Martinez hit Van Slyke on the hand, Van Slyke charged the mound and both benches emptied. Van Slyke (who left the field with his left arm in a sling), Martinez, Expos catcher John Poppert and Expos reliever Nehomar Ochoa were all ejected from the game.
New Jersey took advantage of Martinez' ejection as reliever Edward Rodriguez walked the next two Cardinals to load the bases and Matt Wilkerson followed with a grand slam homer to leftcenter for an 8-0 lead.
The Cardinals weren't done as they added four more runs (three unearned) in the fourth for a 12-0 advantage. The Expos got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Rolando Arnedo and scored two more times in the fifth. New Jerseu added another run in the sixth and Vermont closed out the scoring with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the three-game sweep, the Cardinals scored 11 runs on Friday, 10 runs Saturday and 13 runs in the finale on Sunday for 34 total runs. It is the first time in Vermont history that the Expos have allowed double-digit runs in three consecutive games. Vermont has also allowed double-digit hits in seven straight games.
Yonathan Sivira was 3-for-4 with three runs and Wilkerson 2-for-4 with five RBI for New Jersey (16-17), while Mitchell Boggs (1-3) allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings for the victory.
Andy Lane was 3-for-5 with two runs and John-Michael Howell was 2-for-4 with three RBI for Vermont (8-25), while Martinez (0-6) allowed five runs (four earned) in two innings for the loss.
The Expos, who have lost four straight and 10 of their last 11, play the next three games at the Staten Island Yankees. Monday night's game at Staten Island will be televised live on the YES Network and all three games can be heard on the internet at www.wsia.com or through the Staten Island Yankees website at www.siyanks.com.
