Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER, Fla. (April 21, 2013) - The Palm Beach Cardinals knocked off the Fort Myers Miracle, 6-5, in 10 innings on a Jonathan Rodriguez walk-off home run on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium.
To force extra innings, the Miracle rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 5-3. After plating one run in the fourth, Fort Myers tied the game 3-3 on a line drive, two-run homer from Kyle Knudson over the left field wall. The home run was Knudson's second of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals regained the lead with a two-run blast from Colin Walsh off Miracle starter Jason Wheeler to put Palm Beach up 5-3. The homer was the second given up by Wheeler who also allowed a solo shot to Anthony Garcia in the third.
The action picked up in the top of the fifth inning when Miguel Sano faced Palm Beach reliever Brandon Creath. The first pitch from Creath went behind the head of Sano. After working the count to 3-1, Sano launched a tape measure home run that cleared the Marlins training facility situated behind the left field wall and made it a 5-4 game. Shortly after the home run, home plate umpire Fernando Rodriguez ejected Sano. The ensuing argument resulted in manager Doug Mientkiewicz being thrown out by Rodriguez and field umpire Charlie Tierney tossed Stephen Wickens from the Miracle dugout.
Fort Myers tied the game in the seventh inning on back-to-back two-out doubles from Kennys Vargas and Lance Ray, 5-5. Ray finished 3-for-5.
The score remained tied until the first pitch of the tenth inning when Jon Rodriguez sent an offering from Miracle reliever Nelvin Fuentes over the left field fence to to give the Cardinals the victory.
Heath Wyatt (2-1) pitched a scoreless top of the tenth for the win and Fuentes (0-1) was dealt the loss. Wheeler received a no decision after giving up five runs on six hits in four innings.
Miguel Munoz and Corey Williams combined to pitch five scoreless innings of relief.
The game started at 3:03 p.m. after a one hour and 58 minute rain delay.
The Miracle (14-3) return to Roger Dean Stadium to take on Palm Beach (10-7) tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Fans can listen to the action on www.miraclebaseball.com and Fox Sports Radio 1350 AM in Southwest Florida.
