Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
The Palm Beach Cardinal bats were active Thursday night after plating just two combined runs in as many previous games, and defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers 7-5 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium after logging nine hits.
The Beach Birds scored four in the fifth inning and three in the seventh to provide enough cushion to survive a ninth-inning scare in Game 3 of the series. After Jhon Torres drove in Palm Beach's first run, Thomas Francisco lined sharply to right field with the bases loaded to clear the base paths and give the Cardinals their first lead of the matchup. After Lakeland cut the margin to 4-3 heading into the seventh inning stretch, the home team widened its advantage to four runs behind a Matt Chamberlain RBI triple, a Francisco one-run single, and a Romeri RBI base knock.
However, Cardinals reliever Nelfri Contreras was forced to escape a jam in the final frame before the team could celebrate its second straight win. With just one out and the tying runs in scoring position, southpaw born on Christmas Day induced a strikeout and groundout to clinch the game and get Palm Beach back to .500 overall in the standings.
Starting pitcher Carlos Guarate tossed six frames, striking out eight while walking just one. He earned the win to improve to 4-4 on the season while allowing two runs. Roy Garcia threw two innings and surrendered one earned run on his way to a hold.
Offensively, Torres' output led the team on Thursday, going 2-3 while batting in the ninth spot. Francisco was 2-4 with a quartet of RBIs, and Chamberlain was 2-5. Sander Mora did not log a hit in the matchup but walked twice.
Palm Beach is back in action Friday night as they look to gain a 3-1 series lead on their foes from the I-4 Corridor. For Thursday's final box score, click here.
