Carbaugh Hurls Complete Game Over Titans

TORRINGTON - The Torrington Titans were looking to build a little momentum Tuesday night against the Martha's vineyard Sharks but one of the best pitchers in the FCBL had other ideas.
Bob Carbaugh (Seton Hill) went the distance for Martha's Vineyard and the Sharks remained one of the league's hottest teams with a 4-2 victory over the Titans at Fuessenich Park.
"I had a lot of trust in my catcher, Justin Meier called a great game," Carbaugh said. "He trusted everything I threw warming up and I was able to bring it into the game."
Torrington (10-14) was looking to build off of a 3-0 victory over Pittsfield on Monday night but instead dropped another close game. The Titans are 4-6 in their last 10 games and three of their last four losses have come by one run.
Spencer Thomas (South Georgia College) took the loss after allowing two runs and seven hits in five innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter and kept the Titans in the game but the Torrington bats never got going until it was too late.
The Titans committed three throwing errors in the first inning which helped the Sharks take a 1-0 lead. Thomas got out of the jam by striking out Ryan Uhl (IUP) with runners on second and third to end the inning.
Staked to an early lead, Carbaugh was able to keep the Titans off balance. He retired the first eight batters he faced and got a number of outs on pop ups and weak ground balls.
"His fastball had some movement and his speed differential between his fastball and his curveball must have been 15 miles an hour," said Torrington's Mike Odenwaelder, who entered the game tied for the league lead in home runs and third in RBI. "It was a lot and the difference kept us off balance."
Martha's Vineyard rallied with two outs in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Dylan Tice (IUP) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Ryan Siegel (Mercyhurst). Nik Campero (UMass) drove Tice home with a bouncing double down the third base line that just eluded a diving Kyle Decker (Trinity) and gave the sharks a 2-0 edge.
The Sharks made it 4-0 in the top of the ninth and the additional runs would prove to be crucial. A pair of singles and a groundout gave the Sharks runners at second and third with one out. Titans reliever Connor Landers (Sacred Heart) came in for Zach Taylor and after Campero was intentionally walked to load the bases, Landers struck out Donnie Cimino (Wesleyan) for the second out of the inning.
Just when it looked like Landers might get out of the jam, Uhl lifted a two-run single to left to extend the Sharks' lead and give Carbaugh some margin for error that he ended up needing.
Torrington's Kaleb Holbrook (South Georgia College) was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth and Bob Seda (Freed-Hardeman College) crushed a 2-1 pitch to left for his first home run as a Titan to cut the lead in half.
Playing in just his second game with the Titans, Seda has already come in and made a good impression with an RBI in his debut on Monday and a shot over the fence Tuesday night to give the Titans a little life.
"It's been a good start and I hit a good shot tonight, I just it would have been to tie it," Seda said. "Their pitcher threw well, had some movement and kept us off balance tonight."
Carbaugh, who seems all the way back from Tommy John surgery two years ago, responded to Seda's blast by getting the next three hitters to end the game and give the Sharks their 10th win in their last 11 games. Carbaugh (5-0) allowed two runs and scattered four hits in his first complete game of the season. He struck out four and allowed two walks while joining Nashua's Geoff Fisher at the top of the league's wins list with five.
"I've been relying on my fastball all year and it has paid off," Carbaugh said. "I have a lot of trust in my defense and in Justin, he's caught all my games. I just focus on what I am trying to do and let my defense work for me, they have been phenomenal behind me."
