
Captains Split DH with Kannapolis

(Eastlake, OH) - It was a tale of two games as the Lake County Captains split a doubleheader with the Kannapolis Intimidators on Sunday. The Captains dropped game one 1-0, but picked up the offense in game two winning 6-5. Mike Pontius picked up his first win of the year in game two and kept his scoreless streak alive at 21.1 innings on the season. Doug Pickens delivered the clutch game winning hit in the second game.
Game one was a pitchers duel. The Intimidators scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning against Captains starter Kelvin De La Cruz. With one out, Dale Mollenhauer tripled to left field. Two batters later he would score on a sacrifice fly by Sergio Morales. De La Cruz would go 5.2 innings giving up just the one run on six hits, striking out six. His record fell to 1-2. Intimidators starter Johnnie Lowe went six scoreless inning scattering two hits and picked up his second win. Levi Maxwell pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his first save.
Game two saw the Captains strike first in the first inning. The Captains would load the bases with on a single by Adam White, a single by Jeff Hehr and a walk to Chris Nash. With two out, White would score on a wild pitch from Intimidators starter Charlie Shirek. The lead did not last long as the Intimidators scored two runs in the second off of Captains starter Ryan Morris. Jose Martinez doubled in a run and Morales had another sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. The Captains recaptured the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the second on a two run home run by Lucas Montero. It was Montero's first homer of the year.
Kannapolis battled back to take the lead 4-3 with two runs in the third inning on RBI's by Andrew Mead and Christian Marrero. They added another run in the fourth inning when Morris uncorked a wild pitch that scored Martinez from third base to make it 5-3. The Captains went ahead for good in the fifth inning off of reliever Santo Luis. The Captains loaded the bases with no outs. Chris Nash hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-4. Two batters later, Doug Pickens delivered a 2-out, 2-run single up the middle to put the Captains up 6-5.
The series continues on Monday with game time at 7:05 PM. The Captains send RHP Chris Archer to the mound (1-2, 2.11) against the Intimidators RHP Nathan Jones (0-2, 6.99). Monday is Buck Night at Classic Park and the theme is Cinco de Mayo. $1 beers, hot dogs, and sodas are available throughout the night. Fans can purchase tickets for $1 off the regular adult box seat price as well. Also, Chick-fil-A will be at Classic Park on Monday to celebrate the grand opening of its new store in Willoughby. One lucky fan at Monday night's game will win a free year of Chick-fil-A.
There is a second doubleheader between these two teams on Tuesday that will begin at 5:05 PM. The News-Herald High School Home Run Derby will continue after the game on Tuesday. The contest goes on after every Tuesday home Captains game with the finals following the game on July 8th.
