Jackets Win Season High Fifth Straight Game

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (16-15) won their fifth straight game with another 2-1 win over the Rome Braves (11-19) Sunday afternoon. Steven Calicutt worked a career high seven shutout innings and Ramon Corona drove in what proved to be the game winning run in the fifth inning.

Calicutt (2-1) allowed just three hits, no walks and struck out five for the win.

Augusta took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from Andrew Davis scoring Thomas Neal from second base. Neal led off the half inning with a base hit then moved up to second when Angel Villalona reached on a fielding error from Braves third baseman Jon Gilmore.

The GreenJackets added their second run in the fifth inning when Ramon Corona connected for an RBI sac-fly to center with the bases loaded. Jackson Williams scored on the play giving Augusta a 2-0 lead.

Andrew De La Garza worked the eighth inning for Augusta and allowed one run on two hits. David Berres broke up the shutout with an RBI sac-fly to left scoring Gilmore.

Daniel Otero pitched the ninth inning for Augusta to record his fifth save of the season.

The GreenJackets and Braves continue their series Monday night with Augusta sending right-hander Oliver Odle (1-3, 6.00) to the mound. The Braves will start their third straight lefty with Jose Ortegano (0-1, 3.12) taking the hill for Rome. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes:

Otero has not allowed a run in 13.1 innings pitched this season

Braves starter Chad Rodgers (1-5) struck out a season high nine batters in the loss, the most by an opposing pitcher this year.

Andrew Davis was the only batter for Augusta to collect two hits in the game finishing 2-for-3

Augusta has won five straight games for the first time in 2008...Augusta is above the .500 mark for the first time since April 24 when they were 11-10
