Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md.- Another day, and another win for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds made it three in a row on Sunday afternoon behind the stellar pitching of Luis Noel and a three-hit day by Joe Nowicki. If Lake County loses game two of their doubleheader today with Kannapolis, the Shorebirds would be tied with the Captains for first place in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League.
For his third straight outing, Noel allowed just one run, and Delmarva improved to 6-0 on the year when Noel starts the ballgame. Today, the Dominican right-hander gave up just three hits in five innings, striking out six and walking two to pick up his second victory of the year. Three solid innings in relief by Shane Mathews and then a dominant ninth by Brian Parker ensured the Shorebirds would prevail by a score of 4-2 over West Virginia. Parker earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The offense was not over-powering, but the Shorebirds scored in four different innings and led throughout the game. With a run apiece in the second, third, and fourth, the Shorebirds were on top 3-zip when West Virginia's Steffan Wilson blasted the only home run of the game in the fifth inning to get the Power on the board. While the visitors scored again in the seventh to get within a run at 3-2, Ryan Adams' RBI triple in the bottom of the inning gave Delmarva a 2-run cushion that would hold up through the finish.
Along with Nowicki's three hits, Tyler Henson also chipped in a multi-hit effort with a single in the first and a triple in the third.
The Shorebirds are now 5-1 on the homestand and have taken the first two from the Power. The series continues Monday night at 7:05 and will wrap up on Tuesday morning, a 10:35 am breakfast ballgame for the finale.
