Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
A couple of hours before the 2010 American Association All-Star Game, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains' Christopher Garcia lost the home run derby to Sioux Falls' Beau Torbert in a sudden-death "blast-off." Then, on the ninth pitch of the game, Garcia found that missing derby homer, as he went to the opposite field against hometown starter Nick Singleton for a two-run shot, starting a big night for both him and his South Division teammates, as they cruised by the North Division All-Stars 12-3 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan.
After going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, Garcia was named the game's MVP, the first Captains player ever awarded that honor.
Garcia's five Shreveport-Bossier mates were also solid in the game. Osvaldo Rodriguez was picked to start the game and got a double play and a strikeout to keep the North off the scoreboard in the first inning, before getting a flyout and a groundout after a one-out double in the second.
Captains left fielder Palmer Karr (who finished 1-for-3 with two walks) earned one of those free passes in the middle of a one-run third for the South, before Shreveport-Bossier lefty Ryan DiPietro took the hill in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff walk to Lincoln's Albenis Machado, DiPietro got two flyouts and a groundout to keep the South up 3-0, eventually becoming the winning pitcher.
Garcia drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth, as the South scored a pair off of Sioux Falls righty Chris Salberg. Grand Prairie's Luke Prihoda threw up a zero in the bottom of that inning, while the South was kept off the scoreboard in the fifth.
The third Captains pitcher, lefty Richard Salazar, worked the bottom of the fifth, getting two groundouts and a flyout in a 1-2-3 inning.
The South broke the game open in the sixth, scoring seven times, including a sacrifice fly by Garcia and capped off by a grand slam by Fort Worth's John Allen.
Sioux Falls' Reggie Abercrombie and St. Paul's Jason Cooper hit solo homers in the sixth and seventh against El Paso's Shaun Ellis and Pensacola's Ron Hill, but it was way too little and way too late for the North, who still trailed 12-2. Finally, the 40-year-old Shreveport-Bossier closer Hector Carrasco came on to finish things off, allowing an unearned run after a one-out walk, but getting a groundout from Wichita's Jeff Christy to close out the South's third win in four years in the American Association All-Star Game.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains are back in action on Thursday night to start a four-game series against the Fort Worth Cats on the road, beginning at 7:05 p.m. The Captains are back home on Monday, August 2, against Wichita to start a three-game series and a nine-game, 10-day, season-long homestand. The first game is Jose Cuervo Presents Margarita Monday/Ladies' Night, with free admission for women over 21 and discounted Jose Cuervo Margaritas throughout the game. All games are broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM as well as streaming live on supertalk1340.com.
