Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
SANDY, UT - Vancouver Whitecaps FC dropped a 4-0 result to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium Wednesday night in Sandy, Utah.
RSL opened the scoring in the first minute thanks to midfielder Damir Kreilach, who chipped the ball into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Neither team created much for the rest of the half, meaning Salt Lake would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime interval.
In the 53rd minute, the 'Caps came close to finding the equalizer as Cristian Dájome whipped a low, threaded ball into the area but Deiber Caicedo couldn't direct his effort on target at the back post.
Despite losing the possession battle, the Claret and Cobalt would bounce back, as Kreilach headed home his second of the game off a cross from Justin Meram to give RSL a 2-0 advantage.
The 'Caps continued to press, searching for a way back into the match.
After a Salt Lake corner kick, Caicedo latched onto the loose ball and sprinted his way to the top of the RSL box, laying the ball off for a wide open Brian White. The 'Caps striker decided to make his way into the RSL penalty area and lay it off for the oncoming Janio Bikel, who put his effort just wide of the far post.
In the 71st minute, Real Salt Lake made it 3-0 as Albert Rusnak converted a penalty kick for his second goal of the season.
RSL made it 4-0 in stoppage time as substitute Anderson Julio volleyed home the loose ball to put the game to bed.
The 'Caps now enter a 10-day break between matches before another Western Conference contest against LA Galaxy on Saturday, July 17 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Kickoff for that match is set for 7 p.m. PT. You can catch the match live on TSN1/4 and AM730, with the radio pre-game show starting at 6 p.m. PT.
