Caps Come Back and Clobber Calgary 12-3
July 19, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release
Calgary, AB - The Edmonton Capitals completely returned the favour on the Calgary Vipers Monday night. The Vipers came in to Edmonton Friday through Sunday and won all three games against their neighbours to the north, but on Monday at Foothills Stadium the Caps got some sweet revenge, putting an impressive 18 hits on the board in a 12-3 victory.
It wasn't quite as many as the 23 hits the Vipers produced during Saturday's game back at TELUS Field, but the Caps got some much needed offence on Monday to get back the win column, scoring at least one run in every inning except the second.
They are now 29-22 on the North American League season and trail the 31-22 Vipers by just one game in the North Division standings, with four more games scheduled between the rivals this week in Calgary.
The biggest individual offensive contribution for the Caps on Monday came from an unlikely source, as utility player Pete Tountas replaced first baseman Brent Metheny midway through the game and went on to hit two doubles and drive in three runs. Second baseman Matt Rogelstad also had a big game, going 2-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBI, while centre fielder Steve Brown contributed with three hits and three runs. Left Fielder Todd Linden also went 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs.
Caps starting pitcher Lou Pote was coming off a rough loss to the Vipers in his previous start, but he was back to his dominant ways on Monday with just one earned run and four hits allowed through seven innings. Pote also struck out seven Vipers and continues to lead the league in that category with 66 on the season, while his record improves to 5-2. Reliever Chad Blackwell scattered one run on two hits over the final two innings while striking out three Calgary batters to close out the win.
The Caps and Vipers play again in Calgary Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all at 6:30 p.m. Edmonton then returns home to TELUS Field to play back-to-back series against the Chico Outlaws July 23-26 and the Lake County Fielders July 28-31.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
