Sacramento Capitals News Release
(Sacramento, CA) - The Sacramento Capitals protected the rights to Vania King, Mark Knowles and Dusan Vemic in Tuesday's 2011 World TeamTennis draft, as announced by the team today. The Capitals also picked-up Sacramento's own Yasmin Schnack in the fourth round of the draft.
Sacramento protected King as a roster exempt draft selection prior to the draft. King, one of the nation's top tennis stars, enters her second season with the Capitals. The 22-year-old Southern California native won the 2010 Wimbledon Women's Doubles Title and the 2010 US Open Women's Doubles title.
The Capitals also protected Knowles, a former World No. 1 doubles player, with their first round pick. Knowles, of the Bahamas, returns for his 10th season with Sacramento.
"We are very pleased with our roster entering this season," said Capitals General Manager Matt McEvoy. "I think we have two of the best players in World TeamTennis in Vania King and Mark Knowles. They both have had success at the highest level of the game and we expect the Capitals to reach the playoffs with this talent."
The Capitals used their second round pick to protect Vemic, who returns for his second season with the team. The Serbian pro has been ranked as high as No. 31 in doubles in his career.
Schnack is the newest addition to the Capitals. Raised in Sacramento, Schnack competed at UCLA and, at 21 years old, is new to the tour. The team expects her to be an ideal pairing with King in doubles play.
"She is tall and athletic," King said about Schnack. "I think she one of the best girls in the draft, especially in doubles. I'm excited to play with her."
Each of the nine WTT franchises participated in the four rounds of Tuesday morning's draft. The Capitals traded their third round pick to the Washington Kastles in exchange for their fourth round pick and future considerations.
