Cape Cod pushes Razorsharks to the limit

Cape Cod Frenzy News Release

Rochester, New York: The Cape Cod Frenzy pushed the ABA Champion Rochester Razorsharks to the limit before falling 92-88 before a crowd of nearly 7,900.

The Frenzy looked to be the spoilers as the Razorsharks sought to break the all time Rochester record for consecutive home wins. The victory was the 24th in a row for the Razorsharks, which eclipsed the previous high mark by the Rochester Zeniths in 1978-79. The game was also the first live televised game for the Rochester organization as the game was broadcast on Time Warner SportsNet.

The Frenzy began the game showing jitters early on and fell behind 23-7. Veteran guard Sly McIntosh was then inserted into the game and immediately lifted his teammates by hitting three straight jumpers to pull the Frenzy within 25-16. A steal and lay in plus the foul by Frenzy forward Raheim Lamb made the score 25-22 Rochester, and a three pointer by Jamaal Brooks ended the first quarter 28-25 with Rochester leading.

In the second quarter the Frenzy started clicking on the defensive end which got them into their transition game. Rochester Head Coach Rod Baker was called for a technical foul as he tried to get his team back to life. A block by Frenzy center Ife Anosike led to a driving layup by Byron Mouton and a 45-41 Frenzy lead. Rochester was then whistled for a five second call with only nine seconds left in the half, giving possession back to the Frenzy. Steve Hailey subsequently nailed a three pointer for a 48-41 Frenzy halftime lead.

The Razorsharks, showing the heart of a champion, came to life in the third quarter. Their pressure defensive created consecutive breakaway layups and they built a 67-61 lead midway through the third quarter. Frenzy point guard Steve Hailey took over, slicing the Razorshark defense to shreds. A flurry of Hailey jumpers and slashing layups in traffic reclaimed the lead for the Frenzy at 68-67 by the end of the third quarter.

Cape Cod continued to play aggressive defense and Hailey's repeated attacks through the fourth quarter built the Frenzy lead to twelve, at 85-73 with 5:26 remaining in the game. The Razorsharks bid to break the all time consecutive home win record seemed in jeopardy!

Rochester responded. Smothering defensive pressure and pounding the offensive glass helped the Razorsharks go on a 10-0 run that brought them within two points at 85-83 with a minute to play. Hailey was then called for a 7 second violation which gave the ball back to Rochester and turned the 3D lights on. James Reaves was fouled attempting a post shot and made all three free throws for an 86-85 Rochester lead with 40 seconds to go. Another Frenzy turnover led to an uncontested lay up and an 88-85 Rochester lead. Jamaal Brooks hit a three pointer with 9 seconds left to make it 90-88 but Reaves broke away from the pack for an layup while the Frenzy players focused on trying to steal the inbounds, for a 92-88 final score.

The Frenzy were led by Steve Hailey with 25 points and 5 assists, Sly McIntosh with 16 points, Raheim Lamb had 12 points, and Rob Sanders had 10 points and 5 rebounds despite being saddled with 4 fouls in the first half. Ife Anosike had 4 blocks.

The Razorsharks were led by 6'8 power forward James "Mook" Reaves with 34 points.

Rochester improves to 10-4 and Cape Cod falls to 6-5.
