Boston Cannons News Release
Boston, MA - From the start it was Mike Powell's game. Playing his most aggressive and his best overall game as a member of the Cannons Powell scored three times, handed out four assists to earn Bud Light MVP honors and lead the Cannons to a 19-14 over Los Angeles at Harvard Stadium. Powell saved his best performance for a Cannons regular season record 9,375 fans.
"I spoke with Bill (Daye) earlier and the week and we agreed I needed to be more aggressive," said Powell. "I made a point to go to the goal more and once that started I was able to get my teammates involved. This was a fun win for our team. Everybody contributed and the crowd was amazing."
Powell wasn't alone in the hat trick department. Three other Cannons players reached the mark. Matt Poskay, rookie David Mitchell and Brett Bucktooth each registered three goals apiece. For Mitchell is it was his first career MLL game. He was drafted 8th overall by the Cannons in the MLL Collegiate Draft on Thursday.
"I'm happy to be part of this team and this league," said Mitchell. "Playing with guys like Mike (Powell) and John (Christmas) is great. Those guys are outstanding players and get the ball moving around."
Boston did most of its initial damage in the late first quarter and early second quarter. After LA jumped out to a 4-2 lead the Cannons went on a 9-2 run to take an 11-6 lead midway through the second quarter. Mitchell scored all three of his goals during the run. Powell netted all three of his as well and added an assist.
LA closed the half with two goals and Boston lead 11-8 heading into the locker room.
The Cannons started the second half with four straight goals, two by Poskay and two by Bucktooth. The Cannons had leads of as many as seven and six goals in the third and fourth quarters respectively. The Riptide closed to within three goals with 4:36 remaining in the game.
Out of a timeout called by Cannons head coach Bill Daye midfielder DJ Andrzejewski drove to the cage and scored effectively putting the game out of reach. Ben DeFelice scored the game's final goal.
"This was a total team win," said Daye. "We played well in all facets of the game. It is a real tribute to every member of this team, from our starters to guys who didn't dress. Everyone showed up at practice this week focused and ready to get a win."
Flying under the radar screen amidst the Cannons offensive explosion was the play of goalie Jake Coon and face-off midfielder David Jenkins. Coon made 20 saves and almost turned one into an end to end goal scoring opportunity. Jenkins won 21 of the 35 face-offs he took.
The win improves the Cannons to 2-2. The loss was LA's first they are now 2-1. Boston plays next on the road Saturday June 9 against the defending champion Philadelphia Barrage. The Cannons next home game is Friday June 15 at 7:30PM at Harvard Stadium.
