Canney, Riptide hold on for 4-3 win
Akron, Ohio July 10th - Two pitcher, Eileen Canney for the Riptide and Angela Tincher for the Racers, tied for second in the league for wins with seven, took the circle tonight in the second game of a four games series each looking for a share of the lead. Tonight would be Canney's night as walks hurt Tincher as the Riptide took a 4-0 lead and hung on to win 4-3. Canney pitched a complete game, while Tincher gave way to Radara McHugh in the sixth.
The Riptide had runners on base in each of the first two innings and finally broke through in the third thanks to some walks and Jessica Merchant's team leading fifth home run. Shanel Scott and Jackie Pasquerella each drew walks in the innings prior to Merchant's two out blast which put the Riptide ahead 3-0. Walks and an error gave the Riptide another run in the fourth as Gina Carbonatto led off with a walk, moved to second on Lisa Iancin's bunt, advanced to third on a ground out and came home for an unearned run on an error by Angelena Mexicana.
Meanwhile Canney was cruising having faced only 14 batters through 5.2 innings (the only base runner, Norelle Dickson who had walked, was thrown out stealing). That all ended in the fifth when Veronica Wootson hit her third home run of the year.
That was the only Racer hit until the seventh when Kristen Butler opened the inning with a single. After Kate Robinson hit into a fielder's choice and Susan Ogden grounded out it looked like a quick win, but the Racers made it interesting. Wootson singled scoring Jaimee Juarez (Robinson's pinch runner), Shannon Doepking walked and Mexicana singled into left when neither Alex Sutton or Iancin called a routine fly ball. Canney managed to get out of the inning on the next batter to preserve the win. Canney struck out seven and she maintains the league lead with 87.
The Riptide return home to Martin Field to complete the away-home series with the Racers. The games are on Wednesday the 16th, Thursday the 17th (St. Patrick's Day at Martin Softball Field), Friday the 18th (features the friends of the Wiggles from Six Flags) and Saturday the 19th. All games are at 7:05
