Charlotte Checkers News Release
RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Director of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed left wing Brett Sutter to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Sutter $525,000 on the NHL level or $75,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of at least $105,000 for the season.
"Brett performed well for the Checkers last season, especially in the playoffs," said Francis. "He will have an opportunity to compete for time on NHL level this season."
Sutter, 24, was acquired by the Hurricanes on Nov. 17, 2010, from the Calgary Flames, and spent most of the remainder of the 2010-11 season with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Viking, Alb., native totaled nine goals and 12 assists (21 points) in 60 regular season games for Charlotte. He also played five games on the NHL level with Calgary and Carolina, earning one assist with the Flames and making his Hurricanes debut on Feb. 12 at Tampa Bay. Sutter (6'0", 200 lbs.) notched 14 points (4g, 10a) in 16 Calder Cup playoff games for Charlotte, and was the Checkers' leading scorer during their run to the conference finals.
Drafted by Calgary in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter has totaled one goal, one assist (2 points) and 12 penalty minutes in 19 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. In 272 career regular-season AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte, he has notched 80 points (32g, 48a) and 266 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Sutter played four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Kootenay and Red Deer, tallying 138 points (58g, 80a) and 274 penalty minutes.
The Carolina Hurricanes will open their 2011 exhibition schedule on Sept. 19 at Buffalo. For information on 2011-12 Carolina Hurricanes ticket packages, please visit www.CarolinaHurricanes.com, or call 1-866-NHL-CANES.
