Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - The Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with the MTS Centre are pleased to announce that Canadian Idol star Rex Goudie will perform the National Anthem before this Saturday's Western Hockey League game in Winnipeg against the visiting Regina Pats.
A 19-year old native of Burlington, Newfoundland, Goudie finished a close second to this year's Canadian Idol winner Melissa O'Neil.
A big fan of "The Boss - Bruce Springsteen", Rex began singing at the age of three, entertaining his grandmother.
"Nan would have me going around the house singing Sunday School songs and occasionally a bit of folk music," says Goudie, who was born in Dawson Creek, B.C. "She never had me leave a room without singing her a song."
Goudie began singing in public a year later, blasting out a diverse musical taste ranging from Frank Sinatra to AC/DC. At age 16, he helped to form a band "Purple Monkey Band Squad" with three of his friends.
Rex is now enrolled at Memorial University where he hopes to study mechanical engineering. A self-described "car nut", Goudie works as a mechanic for his father's trucking company during the summer. He calls himself a "decent" hockey player and a big fan of the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs.
As for his appearance on Canadian Idol, he says "This competition has given me a lot of confidence about my singing and my music. After learning what the judgest think and that my style of music is reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen and others, I am very confident in myself as a singer and a person.not overconfident thought, that's not me at all.
In addition to singing the national anthem, the SONY BMG Music Canada Recording Artist will participate in a number of activities throughout the city of Winnipeg this weekend. Among them - the 23rd Annual Christmas Miracle at St. Vital Centre.
