Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release

LITTLE FALLS, NY - It was a night of excitement for the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs, as they would begin their 2019 season with some north-of-the-border competition. Unfortunately for Mohawk Valley, it went south very quickly.

The Academie Baseball Canada, from Quebec, scored a run in the third inning and never looked back, humbling last year's Central Division champions by the score of 4-2.

Samuel Gaudreault got the scoring started in the top of the third, with a hot grounder up the middle that scored William Pichette. However, Mohawk Valley starter Carson Coon (Meriden, CT/Manhattan) was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam with just one run of damage, thanks to a diving catch by Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, NY/LeMoyne).

The Academie Baseball Canada added some insurance in the top of the sixth, as Ryan Hernandez (Tampa, FL/San Jacinto CC) bobbled a throw to first base, that wound up scoring Gaudreault. They would add some more support in the very next inning from an RBI single by Raphael Pelletier

That would be all pitchers Antoine Jean and Jaycob LaChance would need but Alfonso Villalobos would add another run on an RBI single in the top of the ninth. Villalobos ripped a ball into the gap to score Pichette.

The Diamond Dawgs finally got on the board with an error by the pitcher that scored Fureno and a redeeming RBI single by Hernandez. His hit, which managed to hop its way past the Canada shortstop, brought home Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT/Mount St. Mary's). Unfortunately for Mohawk Valley, that was as close as they would come, because closer Connor Hodge managed to force Joseph Carpenter into a fielder's choice for the final out.

Jean would pick up the win for the Academie Baseball Canada, while Coon was saddled with the loss for Mohawk Valley.

The Diamond Dawgs will begin their 2019 campaign in earnest on Friday night, when they welcome the Newark Pilots to Veteran's Memorial Park. Game time is scheduled for 6:45 PM.
