Canada and USA to Compete for Medals in 2019 WILC Finals Tonight

In the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship semifinals on Thursday, September 26, Canada blew out England 21-4, and the USA nearly defeated the Iroquois Nationals, ultimately falling 9-7 after a late Iroquois charge.

England got off to a sudden start, getting two surprising goals past Canadian netminder Mike Poulin early. Tallies by Canada's Dane Dobbie and Dhane Smith knotted the game at 2-all by 12:30 in the first quarter. Then, with a marker by Robert Church at 11:43 on the clock in the first, Canada took the lead and never gave it back.

The contest between the USA and the Iroquois was much tighter. Back-and-forth play led to ties in the second quarter (2-2), the third quarter (5-5) and the fourth quarter (6-6). In perhaps the most critical minutes of the matchup, as the clock ran low in the fourth quarter, the Iroquois took off on a three-goal tear; a run that decided the game.

The USA will square off with England for the WILC bronze medal this evening, Saturday, September 28, at 6 p.m. MT.

Later tonight, at 9 p.m. MT, Canada will contest the Iroquois Nationals in the WILC gold-medal game. This will be the fifth-straight meeting between the rival teams in a WILC final. A Canadian victory would mark the team's fifth consecutive world championship win.

Canada and the Iroquois have already faced off once during 2019 WILC pool play. Canada routed the Iroquois 19-12.
