GRAYS 4, NEW JERSEY 1 @ Little Falls, N.J. Time: 2:21 ATT: 1,896 W: Lincoln Mincks (7-3) L: Josh Brey (6-4) S: Randy Rapp HR: NJ - Ricardo Cordova (5) Grays' starter Lincoln Mincks was charged with the unenviable task of halting the team's five-game skid, and he responded like a true ace. Mincks allowed just one run on four hits over eight innings to lead the Grays to a 4-1 win over New Jersey, giving them just their second win of the half. RF Mark Burke had an RBI double for the Grays, and DH Charles Peterson had three hits. Randy Rapp pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save, striking out two. 2B Ricardo Cordova's solo homer was the only run the Jackals could muster against Mincks, who struck out six on the night. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- BROCKTON 4, WORCESTER 2 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 2:52 ATT: 3,231 W: Jon Koch (4-3) L: Alex Pena (4-3) S: Grant Dorn (1) HR: None Rox' manager Ed Nottle used some nifty maneuvering and substituting to put the clamps on a ninth-inning Tornadoes' rally en route to a 4-2 Brockton win. With the Tornadoes having scored once in the inning already, and with the bases loaded and one out, Nottle came out to the mound to replace reliever Grant Dorn. But the skipper didn't send Dorn to the bench; instead he sent him to left field and replaced LF Eddie Gerald with left-hander Kevin Beavers to face lefty Josh Beauregard. Beavers got Beauregard to hit a sac fly ball for out number two. Then Nottle sent Shawn Abel in off the bench to play outfield and take Beavers' spot in the lineup while bringing Dorn back to the hill to face righty SS Scott Loiseau, who was replaced by right-handed pinch-hitter Omar Pena. Dorn got Pena to pop up to first to end the game, earning his first save in his second pitching appearance of the night. Jon Koch gave the Rox a quality start before the relief tandem preserved his win, holding the Tornadoes to one earned run on six hits over eight and a third innings, striking out eight. SS Eugene Julien led the way offensively for the Rox, notching a pair of RBI singles and a stolen base. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW HAVEN 11, QUEBEC 4 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:59 ATT: 1,847 W: Jarrett Stawarz (6-4) L: Coogie Freedman (5-2) S: Tim Vazquez (1) HR: QUE - Eddie Lantigua (22) NHC - Keto Anderson (3), Bill Peavey (12) 3B Eddie Lantigua hit his Capitales-record 22nd home run of the season, a solo shot in the second, but it wasn't enough as New Haven pounded the North Division visitors 11-4. SS Chas Terni was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs for the Cutters, and 1B Bill Peavey homered for the second straight game, a two-run shot in the eighth. CF Keto Anderson hit a two-run homer in the fifth, his third of the year, and finished with three hits. Jarrett Stawarz held the Caps to three earned runs on nine hits over six innings to get his sixth win. Tim Vasquez pitched three shutout innings in relief to get his first save. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NORTH SHORE 7, ELMIRA 0 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:29 ATT: 3,881 W: Bryan Morse (8-2) L: Michael Howell (4-6) S: None HR: NS - Alex Trezza (11), Brian Macchi (5) Bryan Morse dominated the Pioneers, pitching a complete-game shutout to lead North Shore to a 7-0 victory over Elmira. Morse allowed just four hits and one walk over nine innings, striking out seven. Solo homers by C Alex Trezza in the fourth and RF Brian Macchi in the sixth provided the early support, and a four-run eighth inning put the game out of reach for the Pioneers. 2B Marcos Agramonte tripled, singled, stole a base and drove in two in three at-bats for the Spirit. Michael Howell pitched well for the Pioneers, allowing just three earned runs over seven innings, but was saddled with his sixth loss of the year.
