TAMPA, Fla. - Vicente Campos tossed seven shutout innings, helping the Tampa Yankees (23-15) defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads (19-19), 3-1, on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. It was the quickest nine-inning game of the season for Tampa, ending in two hours and two minutes.
After four scoreless frames, the T-Yanks broke through against Jupiter starter Luis Castillo in the fifth. With one out, Austin Aune singled to right and advanced to third when Devyn Bolasky doubled into the left field corner. Francisco Diaz hit a soft ground ball to shortstop that rolled through the legs of Justin Bohn and into left field. Both Aune and Bolasky scored on the play, giving Tampa a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees added a run in the sixth. Abiatal Avelino, Billy Fleming and Bo Thompson strung together three consecutive one-out singles, with Avelino scoring on Thompson's bloop base hit to shallow center.
Campos (W, 4-2) scattered four hits and a walk in seven scoreless innings. The right-hander tallied six strikeouts and threw 58 of his 80 pitches for strikes. Campos retired the final nine batters he faced.
Castillo (L, 4-2) allowed three runs (two earned runs) on seven hits in six innings, striking out four while not permitting a walk. The righty threw 57 of his 75 pitches for strikes.
