Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors are proud to announce that Majors General Manager and Head Coach Dave Cameron will be making his mark on the international stage once again.
Cameron will be joining the coaching staff of the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship men's team as Associate Coach, alongside Assistant Coaches Steve Spott (GM and Head Coach of OHL's Kitchener Rangers) and André Tourigny (GM and Head Coach of QMJHL's Rouyn-Noranda Huskies). GM and Head Coach Willie Desjardins of WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers will be serving as Head Coach at the tournament.
Cameron's previous stint at the World Juniors last year as Assistant Coach with Pat Quinn (Head Coach), Guy Boucher (Assistant Coach) and Desjardins (Assistant Coach) resulted in a gold-medal win for Canada over Sweden at Scotiabank Place in the country's capital.
The 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Regina and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from December 26 to January 5. This upcoming position certainly adds to Cameron's list of coaching accomplishments.
A native of Prince Edward Island, he guided the National Men's Summer Under-18 team back in 2004 to a gold medal at the Junior World Cup. He was also an assistant coach, under head coach Bob Lowes, with the National Men's Summer Under-18 Team at the 2003 Junior World Cup, where Canada finished in fourth place. Cameron led Team Ontario to victories at the 2008 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge as Head Coach on November 20 in Guelph, Ontario and on November 24 in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Cameron will be entering his seventh season as head coach with the Majors next season. From 2000 to 2004, he led the hockey club to four consecutive runs to the OHL's Eastern Conference finals and helped develop key Majors players who've gone on to play in the professional ranks such as the American Hockey League and National Hockey League. He was Head Coach of Binghamton Senators of the AHL from 2004 to 2007, before returning to the Majors organization in summer of 2007.
A former NHL centreman himself, Cameron was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft (8th Round), and played for Colorado and New Jersey of the NHL, and Moncton, Maine and St. John's of the AHL.
Hockey Canada will be announcing plans for the National Junior Team's summer development camp in Saskatoon at a later date. For more details on the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship, Canada's National Men's Teams and the Program of Excellence, log on to www.hockeycanada.ca.
