GAME NOTES: The California Cougars (7-11), and the Major Indoor Soccer League, bring the city of Stockton and its state-of-the-art Arena to the nation's eye on Friday night as the Cougars host the Chicago Storm (13-7) on Fox Soccer Channel. The Cougars are currently on the outside looking in as they are ranked eighth in league standings. The top six MISL teams make the Championship Series at year's end. The Cougars are 1 game back of the sixth seeded Philadelphia KiXX and a half game behind seventh seeded La Raza de Monterrey. California has played fewer games (18) than any other team in the MISL this season. Their season's second half officially started on January 27th against Orlando. However, most would agree that the Cougars latest two week break is truly the midpoint. The Cougars hosted and defeated (27-10) the Premiere Arena Soccer League All-Stars in an exhibition match on Sunday February 10, 2008. Friday's game is crucial for California. They have the tough task of attempting to end their seven game losing streak against a Chicago team that has defeated them twice already this season. The Storm took the first match, 11-10 on October 27th, after a game winning three point goal in the fourth quarter by Randy Soderman. The fall match was first of the season for both the Cougars and Storm. California went on to win six of their next nine games after their season opening loss to the Storm. However, the Cougars are just 1-8 since starting the year 6-3 through their first nine games. The Cougars have been decimated by injuries this season. They expect to see midfielder Nelson Santana, defender/Assistant Coach Antonio Sutton, forwards Naldo and Chris Handsor back in the lineup against Chicago.
Cougars get confidence boost, defeat PASL All-Stars 27-10
Stockton, CA - Feb. 10, 2008 - Sunday's match against the Premiere Arena Soccer League All-Star team was a familiar sight for the California Cougars. Much like their preseason matches; the Cougars begin their second half with a dominating 27-10 win over the nation's top amateur indoor soccer talent at Stockton Arena.
Semir Mesanovic led all scorers with four goals and eight points. The All-Stars were led by two goals from James Katajwa from the Kansas Kings of the Midwest division.
The Cougars used similar victories over the Stockton Pumas (31-0), Estadio Azteca All-Stars (8-5), Turlock Express (15-6) and Stars of Mexico (15-6) to catapult themselves to their fastest start in franchise history. However, the Cougars have lost seven straight since starting their season at 7-4.
"I think this type of win can get us back on track," said Cougars head coach Bernie Lilavois. "The boys played well, this was a nice confidence boost for our team. I liked seeing our targets find their accuracy again and capitalize on so many shots."
"I was really impressed by the PASL boys. They had a tough assignment of having to gel together and face a professional team with very little practice time. A lot of those guys have a future in the MISL."
Cougars forward Naldo had three goals for six points. The Cougars also received goals from Nelson Santana, Franck M'Bemba, Craig Scheer and Luis Pinto in the win. The All-Stars had cut the Cougars' lead to six points in the second quarter after a goal by Ignacio Gutierrez from Off the Wall Soccer in Santa Clara.
