California Cougars News Release

"Qeeks" earns MISL Offensive Player of the Week Award:

Tovar accounted for three of the five total goals scored by the Cougars in their first game of the season. Two of Tovar's three goals equaled the score, 4-4 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, and 8-8 with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter. "Qeek's" first goal came in the second quarter and put the Cougars on the scoreboard for the first time this season. Tovar's third goal came on a penalty kick. After one game played, the 28 year-old Tovar is tied at the top of the league in points with six, and leads the MISL with three two-point goals.

"It's an honor" said Tovar. "But I would gladly trade it for a win. We let that game slip by; we won't let that happen again."

Tovar led the Cougars in the 2006-07 season with 63 points on 26 total goals. His 63 points were the 10th highest total in the MISL. He also finished the season with 10 assists and eight blocks.

"Tovar picked up right where he left off for us last year," said head coach Bernie Lilavois. "The experience he has gained playing in the league the past two seasons along with being part of our US National Futsal Team this past summer has elevated his game. We look for him to be a consistent scorer for us this season."

Joining Tovar on the list is goalkeeper Tony Meola of the New Jersey Ironmen and Baltimore Blast defender P.J. Wakefield.
