MISL names players of the week

November 1, 2007 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Tony Meola, New Jersey Ironmen

Meola returned to indoor soccer for the first time since he played with the Buffalo Blizzard in the 1994-95 season. The US National Team veteran played the entire game in goal this past weekend for New Jersey, recording ten saves in a 7-4 win over the expansion Orlando Sharks. The Kearny, NJ native surrendered two goals (four points) and withstood a flurry of Orlando shots in the final two minutes to preserve the first-ever win for the expansion Ironmen.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

PJ Wakefield, Baltimore Blast

Blast team captain P.J. Wakefield led the Blast's defensive effort Saturday night in the team's 13-8 win over the Milwaukee Wave. The 27-year-old defender recorded four blocks in the game and helped hold the Wave to four goals. Wakefield anchored a Blast defense that held the Wave scoreless for the first 35:57 of the game and the final 4:54 of the game when Baltimore scored three late goals to win the match. Wakefield leads the MISL with five blocks this season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Enrique Tovar, California Cougars

Tovar accounted for three of the five total goals scored by the Cougars in a hard-fought 11-10 loss to the Chicago Storm, the first game of the season for each Club. Two of Tovar's three goals equaled the score, 4-4 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, and 8-8 with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Tovar's first goal came in the second quarter and put the Cougars on the scoreboard for the first time this season. Tovar's third goal came on a penalty kick. After one game played, Tovar is tied at the top of the league in points with six, and leads the MISL with three two-point goals.
